چکیده

Aim: It is assumed that reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation cause cell membrane damage and play a role in oncogenesis. Carnitine and acyl esters, which play a role in intracellular short-, medium-, and longchain fatty acid metabolism, are one of the defense mechanisms against free radical toxicity. It is thought that the protective effects of carnitine are related with its role in lipid metabolism. In our study, we analyzed the relation between malondialdehyde (MDA) and free carnitine, and C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C8, C10, C12, C14:1, C14, C16:1, C16, C18:1, C18, C20:4 carnitine levels in glial tumors [glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) (n = 29), high-grade astrocytoma (n = 8) and low-grade astrocytoma (n = 8)] to determine whether there is a relation between carnitine-acyl carnitines and lipid peroxidation in carcinogenesis.

Determination of CD117 Expression in Glial Tumors and Its Comparison between High Grade and Low Grade Tumors

Background and Objective: Gliomas are the most common primary brain tumors. Despite therapeutic advances, the majority of gliomas do not respond to either chemo or radiotherapy. CD117, the gene product of c-kit has been expressed in cells of glial tumors. Because gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) that express CD117 respond dramatically to treatment with tyrosine kinase inhibitors, ide...

Serum Levels of Glial Fibrillaryacidic Protein in Meningioma

Background: Glial fibrillaryacidic protein (GFAP), an intermediate filament protein, is mainly expressed by astrocytes, but some other cells like enteric glia and non-myelinating Schwann cells can also express GFAP. GFAP elevation has been reported in some types of meningioma and malignant brain tumors. In the present study, we analyzed the association between serum levels of GFAP with meningio...

Comparison of the effects of L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine on carnitine levels, ambulatory activity, and oxidative stress biomarkers in the brain of old rats.

L-carnitine and acetyl-L-carnitine (ALC) are both used to improve mitochondrial function. Although it has been argued that ALC is better than l-carnitine in absorption and activity, there has been no experiment to compare the two compounds at the same dose. In the present experiment, the effects of ALC and L-carnitine on the levels of free, acyl, and total L-carnitine in plasma and brain, rat a...

Age-associated mitochondrial oxidative decay: Improvement of carnitine acetyltransferase substrate-binding affinity and activity in brain by feeding old rats acetyl-L- carnitine and or R- -lipoic acid

We test whether the dysfunction with age of carnitine acetyltransferase (CAT), a key mitochondrial enzyme for fuel utilization, is due to decreased binding affinity for substrate and whether this substrate, fed to old rats, restores CAT activity. The kinetics of CAT were analyzed by using the brains of young and old rats and of old rats supplemented for 7 weeks with the CAT substrate acetyl-Lca...

Estrogen Receptor Expression in Glial Tumors of Iranian Patients: A Single Center Experience

Background & Objective: Gliomas are the most common type of primary intracranial tumors in adults. The expression of estrogen receptors varies in different grades of glial tumors, and some studies have suggested that this expression might have a prognostic value. It seems that estrogen receptor expression negatively correlates with the histological grade of gliomas. In the pres...
